3 Good, 3 Bad: MLS Week Nine

New York Red Bulls unbeaten run is over, New England Revolution lead the way and an MLS legend had a weekend to remember.

Flying High...

1)Donovan delight:
Landon Donovan may not have enjoyed watching Colorado Rapids earn a 1-1 draw at the StubHub Center, but he still had a weekend to remember after getting married.
The USA’s all-time record goalscorer tied the knot with his long term girlfriend Hannah Bartell in a low-key ceremony on the San Diego waterfront.
The Galaxy legend is certainly making the most of his retirement, and has also started working towards obtaining his college degree – congratulations Landon, and good luck!
2) Melia’s moment:
Tim Melia might have thought that he would never make the grade in MLS after disappointing spells with Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA, where he made a combined six appearances.
However, at 28 years of age the New Yorker produced a commanding display on his Sporting Kansas City as he helped the league’s second worst defence earn victory and a cleansheet.
Melia replaced Luis Marin, who had conceded six goals in his previous two games, and we think he’s made the spot his own after his performance saw him make our MLS team of the week.

3) Kendall Waston’s Wager:
Waston produced another dominant performance as VancouverWhitecaps’ secured a fourth cleansheet in five away games against Portland Timbers, but he had 100 other reasons to be happy.
The tough-tackling centre back had picked up five yellow cards in the first seven games of the season when he bet MLS soccer reporter Gary Kingston $100 dollars he could go three games card free.
Kingston had described it as an impossible challenge for Waston but he came through games with Real Salt Lake, DC United and Portland unscathed to go home with a bonus this weekend.

Marsch has made a good start in New York 
1)Red Bulls’ Rage:
MLS’ last unbeaten start to the season is over after New England Revolution beat New York Red Bulls 2-1 to move top of the league’s overall table.
The defeat leaves Jesse Marsch’s team four points behind the Revolution, and the Red Bulls need to start turning draws into victories.
Despite their unbeaten start, they have won just three games so far and have only won one of their last five games since beating Columbus Crew 2-1 on March 28.

2) Nicht making an Impact:
Kristian Nicht has been placed on the waivers list by Montreal Impact despite only signing for the club ahead of their 4-2 Champions League final second leg defeat last week.
The German keeper, who has spent two previous loan spells with Montreal, started that game and made two saves but couldn’t prevent the trophy slipping from Impact’s grasp.
Sadly his performance had little Impact on the coaches, who see the keeper as third or fourth choice, and he follows Rais M’Bolhi onto a growing list of unwanted MLS goalkeepers.

Badji couldn't find the golden touch this weekend
3) Badji’s bad day:
Dominique Badji won the hearts of Colorado Rapids fans when he ended their 602-minute goalless steak against FC Dallas but he had a day to forget against LA Galaxy.
The Senegalese rookie was presented with a golden opportunity to net his second MLS goal after beating Galaxy’s offside trap early in the second half.
However, he was left red faced after producing a finish more suited to Sunday League football, shanking his effort out for a throw in on the far side of the pitch.
