New York Red Bulls hit the front in the Eastern Conference,
Vancouver Whitecaps’ returned to winning ways and Sebastian Giovinco sparkled
again but what else did we take from MLS week seven?

1)Red Bulls rising
Jesse Marsch’s side produced by far their best performance
of the season to sweep past San Jose Earthquakes and move top of the Eastern
Conference.
They trail Vancouver Whitecaps by five points in the
Supporters’ Shield race but have three games in hand, and only tenth-placed
Montreal Impact have played fewer games in their own conference.
After Real Salt Lake’s defeat to the Caps’ they are now the
only unbeaten side in MLS and if Bradley Wright-Phillips can rediscover last
season’s form should coast to their Conference title.
2) Toronto’s troubles
Toronto splashed the cash to bring in Jozy Altidore and
Sebastian Giovinco in the close season and they have seen immediate results
with the duo scoring five of their eight goals.
Only New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union have scored
more in the Eastern Conference, yet Toronto lie ninth following a four-game
losing streak.
They have lost their last two games 3-2 and are conceding an
average of 2.2 goals per game; Greg Vanney’s side need to tighten up at the
back or their attacking verve will go to waste.
3) Mesmerising Martins
Obafemi Martins flattered to deceive during his time in
England but everything the Nigerian touches in MLS seems to turn to goals.
He has formed a mouth-watering partnership with Clint
Dempsey and his fourth goal of the season, against Colorado Rapids, will leave
people wondering what went wrong in the Premier League.

4) Galaxy have lift off
The reigning MLS Cup champions are yet to hit top form this
year but are beginning to grind out results and find themselves third in the
Western Conference after two straight wins.

With Steven Gerrard still to arrive and Gyasi Zardes yet to
find last season’s sparkling form, Galaxy’s presence among the early season
pace setters is an ominous sign for everyone else.
5) It’s an Olympic sell out
Montreal Impact will make their attempt at CONCACAF Champions League history in front of a sold out Olympic Stadium.
The 59,000 sell out will be their second biggest crowd of all-time after the 60,860 that watch Impact take on David Beckham's LA Galaxy in May 2012.
And Frank Klopas' side have a great chance of claiming their first CCL following a backs-to-the-wall 1-1 draw at five-time champions Club America in the first leg.
